THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) has confirmed that a 13-year-old boy from Selangor, Malaysia, drowned at the Pusat Belia Swimming Pool in Bandar Seri Begawan at 5pm yesterday.
The deceased, Chong Wei Liang, was a participant of the international invitational GO game championship that was organised for the first time in the Sultanate through the Brunei Darussalam GO Association at Pusat Belia, BSB.
According to a press release issued by MCYS, the deceased was believed to have gone swimming without informing the management of Pusat Belia.
Following the incident, the MCYS extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, reassuring them that the ministry would assist in covering the cost of sending the body of the deceased to the family’s hometown.
The ministry reminded the public to abide by the rules set by the management at swimming pools to avoid any untoward incidents.
The Royal Brunei Police Force confirmed the drowning incident.
The case is currently under investigation.
It is understood that a post-mortem was carried out last night.
