IPOH (Bernama) – A technician lost RM49,450 after being deceived by a saleswoman into believing that he had won a crystal lamp from a supermarket in Hong Kong.
Batu Gajah police chief ACP Shahron Anuar Abdul Latif said the 41-year-old man said he received a call from the woman claiming to be working at a supermarket in Hong Kong on Sept 25.
“She said the victim had won the prize because he had purchased an item from the supermarket using a membership card,” Shahron Anuar told Bernama when contacted.
He said the victim was later asked to pay the service charge of RM5,670 before he could claim the prize in the form of cash of RM188,000.
The victim deposited the service charge payment into the woman’s bank account on Sept 30, he said.
On Oct 1, he said the victim was told that his membership card had expired and he banked in another RM8,500 into the woman’s bank account to renew the card.
On the same day, the victim was told that his prize money had been used unintentionally by the company to invest in stock acquisition and that he would receive hefty profit in just one day.
