BRUNEI’S hope of winning a trophy at the ongoing Grandmaster of Pool Championship in Subang Jaya, Malaysia lies on the shoulder of Ahmad Taufiq bin Murni after Lim Wei Kok was eliminated yesterday.
Lim won his first match of the tournament when he easily crushed Firdaus of Malaysia 7-3 but the celebration was short lived when he lost 7-2 to Simon of Singapore.
Heading to the loser bracket, Lim won two consecutive matches by disposing two Malaysians Kevin Tan 7-1 and Lewis Loh 7-4.
In the third match, Lim suffered a crushing 7-3 defeat at the hands of Eugene from Singapore and was eliminated from the tournament.
Ahmad Taufiq on the other hand was in dominating form as he qualified into the top 16 bracket with ease.
In the first day of the match, Taufiq easily defeated PK Yap of Malaysia 7-1 followed by a landslide 7-0 win over Wee Teong of Malaysia.
Taufiq continued his fine form with a 7-4 win against Singapore’s Ho Cheng Kang and then completed a perfect record of being undefeated with a 7-3 win over Clement Lim of Singapore.
Taufiq will be in action on Sunday (Jan 25) in the top 16 bracket. Accompanying both cueists to the tournament is national coach Lim Tat Hwe.
