TAIPEI (dpa) – The first German inmate to serve prison time in Taiwan was transferred to his native country, local media reported Saturday.
The inmate surnamed Sollner was handed over to German police Friday at Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport, the United Daily News reported. The Ministry of Justice said Sollner had been caught smuggling 5,152 grammes of heroin from Thailand in 2005, and was sentenced to 14 years in prison the next year.
Taiwan and Germany signed a treaty allowing the transfer of convicted criminals in late 2013, the ministry said. In April 2014, Sollner asked to be transferred to Germany to serve the remainder of his jail term. The Taiwan court’s verdict was recognised by a court in Amberg, Germany, in September 2014.
The six remaining German inmates serving jail terms in Taiwan have also expressed willingness to be transferred to Germany. Their reasons include cultural difference, language barrier, dietary habits and health problems, the ministry said.
