Students receive commemorative coins

STUDENTS yesterday got their hands on the 50 cent denomination of the 5th Series Coins in Circulation during a distribution ceremony at the International Convention Centre in Berakas.

Half a million of the commemorative 50 cent coins were distributed in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebration of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s Accession to the Throne.

A total of 234 representatives of public and private pre-schools, primary and secondary schools as well as sixth form centres from across the nation attended the event.
The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa by Mosque Affairs Officer Haji Ali Yusof bin Haji Arshad.

In his welcoming remarks, Autoriti Monetari Brunei Darussalam (AMBD) Managing Director Yusof bin Haji Abdul Rahman noted that students should appreciate such historical moments of the Golden Jubilee celebration, and that the special gift is an expression of the monarch’s affection for the students, who are the nation’s undisputed assets and leaders of tomorrow.

The event continued with the presentation of the commemorative coins to the student representatives of each institution.

This commemorative coin has a Jawi inscription of ‘Sempena Sambutan Jubli Emas Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah Menaiki Takhta.’

The obverse side of the coin feature a new portrait of His Majesty and the reverse design represent the ‘Mahkota,’ a royal regalia used during the monarch’s coronation ceremony. It consists of elements such as the ‘Alap,’ ‘Tajuk Mahkota,’ ‘Melur Turun’ and ‘Tara Mahkota.’

This 50-cent coin is a special gift to the students, distributed by AMBD, allowing them to own one of the latest currencies collection in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee celebration.

AMBD in collaboration with the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA) will also conduct several outreach activities across all four districts to instill a feeling of gratitude for this special gift.

In addition, financial literacy activities will also be held to foster a savings culture and enhance students’ financial literacy from an early stage.

Permanent Secretary at the MoE Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Md Salleh, deputy permanent secretaries at the MoE and MoRA, senior government officers and principals from both government and private schools were also in attendance.
