FIRE stations in Belait District recorded five cases of roof damage and six of fallen trees caused by strong winds around the area of Lumut in the wee hours of yesterday.
There was also a case of traffic obstructed of a fallen tree in Seria and a report of a collapsed garage in Kuala Belait.
Victim Haji Yahya Tahir, 70, from Lumut, said, “It happened at around 2.30am. As I was going to use the toilet, I was startled by a loud banging noise.”
“Then in the morning, we found one of the rooms’ roof damaged.
“We immediately called the Fire and Rescue Department and they discovered debris had landed on my neighbour’s roof, who is the Head of Kg Lumut II.”
Another victim Awang Zaini bin Ali Amat, who lives with his wife, said he also heard a loud noise.
“It was coming from the kitchen. When I rushed there, I saw the kitchen roof had been blown off and the whole place was already flooded.
“I ended up cleaning it until late this morning. It was difficult to clean without lights as there was also a power outage that affected the area due to the storm.”
Aside from the houses, BLNG also reported cases of fallen trees.
The affected areas were primarily the Zone A and Zone C of the company’s parking lot.
Meanwhile, Awang Mohamad Rosidi, also a Lumut resident, had his vehicle damaged.
The car’s rear window was broken by roof debris.
“The roof belongs to a neighbour from behind my house,” he added.
As a temporary solution, Fire and Rescue Department personnel installed canvases.
