THE Ministry of Development conducted an ‘Enforcement Roadshow and Briefing’ at the Municipal Hall for village heads and mukim penghulus in the Belait District, yesterday.
The guest of honour was Awang Haji Muhammad Lutfi bin Haji Abdullah, Permanent Secretary (Administration and Finance) at the Ministry of Development cum Chairperson of the Ministry’s Enforcement Task Force.
Quoting the Minister of Development’s speech at the previous launching ceremony in September, he said, “The village heads and mukim penghulus are the eyes and ears of the government in monitoring the progress of land and buildings in their vicinity. They should also assist the government to advise residents on any violations of the country’s rules and regulations.”
A series of talks by representatives from each department on laws such as Land Code 1909 Section 40, The Town and Country Planning Act 1972 (Amendment of 1984) and Roads Traffic Act (Section 68) were also held.
The talks aimed to increase public awareness on monitoring methods and enforcements implemented by the Ministry of Development and relevant departments under it.
Speaking on violations by goverment housing recipients, he said, “Despite holding briefings on the do’s and don’ts especially on home modifications prior to awarding the house keys, residents continue to violate the stipulated rules and regulations.
“Through this event, it is hoped that village heads and mukim penghulus will warn residents on the ill effects of such violations towards the safety of nearby buildings, houses and harmony of the neighbourhood. We are giving them a chance to rectify their mistakes.
“Following procedures, we will issue a warning letter to the violators. After two months, another letter will be sent if the violator continues to ignore the warnings.
“The ministry will take the matter to court if the violator refuses to abide by the laws and heed to the letters sent.”
Awang Haji Shahrom bin Hj Suhaimi, Commissioner of Town and Country Planning said, “Given the relatively high number of violators nationwide, we are currently conducting assessments and working in unison to spread public awareness on the rules and regulations of the different departments under the Ministry of Development.” The enforcement talks in the morning were conducted by the Town and Country Planning Department, Housing Development Department, Public Works Department, Land and Survey Department while the afternoon the session was carried out by Department of Environment, Parks and Recreation, Electrical Department and the Fire and Rescue Department.
Also present at the event were the Belait District Officer, Haji Haris bin Othman and officials of the participating departments under the Ministry of Development.
