BRUNEI Darussalam yesterday marked World Diabetes Day 2014 with an open day themed ‘Healthy Living and Diabetes’ to spread public awareness of the disease which is one of the leading causes of death in the Sultanate.
Present to officiate the event at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex in the capital yesterday was Minister of Health Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Adanan bin Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Awang Hj Mohd Yusof.
Hundreds of people thronged the day-long event which offered, among others, free medical check-ups for sugar levels and blood pressure, as well as various exhibitions to raise awareness on diabetes and the importance of a healthy diet.
Other activities included a healthy cooking demonstration by Malaysian celebrity chef, Datuk Chef Wan, while booths were also set up to demonstrate the use of medical instruments in the treatment of diabetic patients.
The Ministry of Health in a press release stated the activities organised yesterday are in line with this year’s celebrations’ theme, and is aimed at educating the public on the disease and methods of managing and preventing the disease.
This event is also a platform for the early detection of diabetes, apart from giving counselling and advise, it added.
World Diabetes Day is celebrated worldwide every November 14. Aside from raising awareness on the disease, one of its objectives is to provide support for diabetics to continue their endeavours in managing the disease.
