A THREE-DAY exhibition, featuring local women entrepreneurs and Halal products, is currently taking place at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas, in conjunction with celebrations for Maulidur Rasul 1438 Hijrah by the Special Women’s Assembly.
One of exhibitors, Pengiran Hajah Hanijah binti Pengiran Haji Damit, a representative of the Brunei Women’s Jawi Club under the Language and Literature Bureau (DBP), told the Bulletin that they have actively participated in numerous programmes, to raise awareness on Khat and Jawi script.
“This exhibition helps to highlight women who are skilled in the Jawi script,” she said. “As teachers, we are still relying on our mentors to help us in mastering Jawi for our own benefit.”
Pengiran Hajah Hanijah also said that their club has worked together with the Ministry of Education to conduct Jawi courses for teachers, as well as Jawi connecting workshops and calligraphy classes.
When asked about the challenges in managing the business, she said that it was often difficult to fulfil their clients’ requirements when creating Khat calligraphy based on the requested shapes and themes.
“We often try to find our own ideas to form exquisite and beautiful creations for our Khat calligraphy, to make sure that our clients are satisfied with the results,” she said.
Pengiran Hajah Hanijah is urging women with an interest in calligraphy to join their club, to broaden their knowledge on the Jawi script and Khat calligraphy.
Among the many items for sale at the Special Women’s Assembly exhibition are Muslimah apparel, local handicrafts and Halal food products.
The exhibition is open to the public from 9am to 5pm, and from 9am to 11.30am and 2pm to 5pm tomorrow, which is its last day.
