EVER since Neil Armstrong uttered the famous words, “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind” on being the first man to set foot on the moon in 1969, the prospect of space travel has ignited the imagination of countless scientists, authors, movie screenwriters and intrepid travellers alike.
Space travel has now come to Brunei with the official launch of the week-long Luminox “Space and Time Converge” Exhibition at The Mall, Gadong from October 25 to November 2.
Minister of Communications, Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar, officiated the launch yesterday.
Also present was Jennifer Tan, Executive Director of Crystal Time (Singapore) and Chong Ain Hong, General Manager of Chang Ein Hong Watch Dealer.
In her speech, Jennifer Tan said that the exhibition intends to bring Bruneians information about the exciting future in space travel. “Commercial space travel is now a reality. In the very near future, ordinary people like you and I will be able to board a spacecraft that will take us into the next frontier – space.”
She revealed that Luminox is proud to be the official timepiece of the XCOR Lynx Mark II spacecraft – a two-seat, piloted spacecraft made by XCOR (United States), which will take people on a suborbital flight 103km above the earth’s atmosphere, on the edge of space, and then return safely to a landing at the takeoff runway.
A giant model is currently on display in the main lobby of The Mall, Gadong measuring six metres in length with a wingspan of five metres and five metres tall.
“For years Luminox has been offering Swiss-made watches for adventure seekers with its SEA, AIR and LAND themed watches. The exhibition also marks the launch of the new Luminox Space series of GMT watches which will be worn by the space pilots and passengers of the Lynx Mark II spacecraft. With the launch of the Luminox Space series of watches, Luminox has embarked on a new fourth dimension – SPACE,” she added.
Members of the public are welcome to visit the Luminox “Space and Time Converge” Exhibition during this period and enjoy special privileges on purchases of Luminox watches.
Exclusively for BIBD Debit Card holders, with every Luminox purchased, they will receive a free Luminox Adventure Knife and take part in a lucky draw to win a Luminox watch.
In addition, Luminox Space “astronaut” mascots will go to different parts of Brunei to mingle with members of the public and entice them to be amongst Brunei’s pioneering space travellers on the Lynx Mark II spacecraft by XCOR.
The mascots will invite members of the public to pose for photographs which will be posted on Luminox Brunei’s social media platforms on Facebook and Instagram.
Bruneians who are interested to find out more about how to become a pioneering space traveller on the Lynx Mark II spacecraft by XCOR are welcome to enquire at the Luminox “Space and Time Converge” Exhibition during this period.
Details such as the flight path, construction of the space shuttle as well as the various space training programmes will be available at the Luminox “Space and Time Converge” Exhibition.
The Luminox “Space and Time Converge” Exhibition at The Mall in Brunei marks the final display in Southeast Asia of the giant model of the Lynx Mark II spacecraft by XCOR.
