‘PRIVATISATION’ was this year’s winning word spelt correctly by Nurin Syahrain binti Haji Husssin from Sayyidina ‘Othman Secondary School, the winner of the Intermediate category of the 6th annual Tutong District Interschool Spelling Bee Competition, held yesterday.
The event was attended by seven schools, including five secondary schools in Cluster Four and two invited schools, Ma’had Islam Brunei and Masin Secondary School.
The competition was held at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Secondary School, which founded the competition in 2009 and it has been running as an annual event since then.
The guests of honour were the Deputy Principal of SM RIPAS, Hjh Roslani binti Hj Abdul Raffar and CfBT Education Project Manager, Robyn Elmi.
Students fiercely competed to spell words from textbooks of both Year 7 and Year 9 levels. The eventual winner of the Year 7 division was Nur Almas Barizah binti Ali Hazis from Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School (SMSB). The overall winner and recipient of the Challenge Trophy was Sufri Bolkiah Secondary School.
Students enjoyed the challenge of spelling some truly difficult English words, such as ‘pseudonym’, ‘chlorophyll’, and ‘paralysis’, showing their extensive vocabulary knowledge and superior listening skills.
The host school looks forward to further refining the competition as it continues to enhance the students’ engagement with the English lexicon.
