SAYYIDINA Abu Bakar Secondary School (SMSAB) emerged as champions of the ‘Drama Competition for Cluster 2 Government Secondary Schools’, scoring a total of 87.5 per cent with a play titled ‘Dang Ayang and The Crocodile’.
The first runner-up was Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Masna Secondary School with a play titled ‘The Chicken Fight’ (83.33 per cent), followed by Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School with ‘Jong Batu’ in third (74.17 per cent).
Prior to the commencement of the competition, a welcome remark was delivered by the Head of Cluster 2, Pg Hjh Maimunah Pg Hj Osman in her capacity as the Principal of SMSAB, followed by a speech from the guest of honour, the Acting Assistant Director II, Curriculum Development Department, Ministry of Education (MoE), Awg Yusof Hj Jemudin.
The Acting Assistant Director II highlighted on the importance of modernising school education especially since Brunei Darussalam has launched the SPN21, which includes drama as one of the subjects.
The competition was aimed at promoting the importance and contribution of Drama subject in supporting the SPN21 goals to help students acquire the 21st Century skills, particularly communication and social skills, as well as to gain the desired attitudes – particularly self-confidence and independence.
The drama competition was also intended to foster team spirit and collaboration among the students.
It was also to allow students and teachers to express their talent, creativity and innovative ideas of constructing and directing plays.
In addition, it also gave students the opportunity to gain confidence through public performances and at the same time improve their communication and social skills.
It also allowed the students to apply their knowledge of culture and history into performing arts through role play of various myths and legends both local and international.
It was shared that it is clear that such a competition not only trained the students to confront an audience but more importantly, convey messages confidently through the character portrayed towards the audience that can instruct and educate the nature of modern life, especially with the issues faced by today’s youth.
