THE National Orphans Fund received a significant boost yesterday from donations collected through the SMS Brunei Prihatin, a short message service formed to collect donations from the public through Brunei’s mobile service providers, DST Sdn Bhd and Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd (PCSB).
Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Datin Paduka Hajah Adina binti Othman, received the donations from the two mobile companies.
Haji Marsad bin Haji Ismail, Deputy CEO of DST Sdn Bhd, presented $88,945 to the Acting Minister, whilst Nurul Haniah binti Haji Jaafar, Head of Legal and Regulatory of Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd, presented $27,016.
The officers and staff of DST Sdn Bhd also donated an amount of $20,000.
Amongst the attendees at the handover ceremony were Permanent Secretaries at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Hamid bin Haji Mohd Jaafar and Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin; Deputy Permanent Secretary Haji Mohd Noor Jusmin bin Haji Abd Samad; Acting Director of Community Development, Hajah Noridah binti Haji Abd Hamid; Manager of Trade of Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB), Ak Mohd Aliuddin bin Pg Haji Ramlee; and senior officers of the ministry, the department of Community Development, Radio Televisyen Brunei, DST Sdn Bhd and Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd.
The donations through the SMS Brunei Prihatin that commenced from July 7 to August 20, 2014 reached almost $116,000.
SMS Brunei Prihatin began its operations for the National Orphans Fund in 2005, and last year’s project was the 10th that was organised by the Department of Community Development, RTB, DST Sdn Bhd and PCSB.
This designated SMS service made it easier for the public to make donations for the National Orphans Fund.
The total donations for the National Orphans Fund up to yesterday afternoon has reached $297,861.39.
