THE 7th Belait District Inter-School Science Powerpoint Presentation Competition 2014 was held recently at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Secondary School Lumut (SMPAPHRSB). The competition was facilitated by Petrokon Utama Sendirian Berhad.
According to a press release, the theme for this year’s competition was “ICT: Its influence on nation’s growth and development”.
A total of 11 schools participated in the competition: five government schools (SMPAPHRSB, Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar Secondary School, Sayyidina Ali Secondary School, Perdana Wazir Secondary School and Anthony Abell College) and six non-government schools (St Margaret’s School, St John’s School, St Angela’s School, St James School, Chung Ching Middle School and Chung Hua Middle School).
The guest of honour at the event was Haji Yahkup bin Haji Menudin, the Chief Executive of Authority for Info-communication Technology Industry (AITI). The event started with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat by Ustaz Nor Esuandi bin Haji Abas followed by the welcoming speech by the school’s principal, Cikgu Hajah Murni binti Abdullah.
The event then continued with the speech by the guest of honour who said that the competition was one of the many initiatives by the educational institution in stimulating interest in and promoting awareness of the importance of ICT.
He hoped that the competition will help the students in conveying a message that is to make an important “point” quickly, concisely, memorably and most importantly, make it fun.
He added that the use of multimedia can help the students to use images, audio and video to have a greater visual impact and improve communication and that PowerPoint also allows the students to work with others in a collaborative manner.
The ICT sector has been identified as one of the key drivers of the domestic economy for Brunei Darussalam. It is seen as one of the potential growing sectors that will contribute substantially to the economic growth, job creations, and productivity and business improvements.
It enhances our global competitiveness, makes our life easier, safer and more comfortable. ICT is also an enabler of innovation. Hence, it is important for Brunei Darussalam to remain at the cutting edge of ICT development and maintain a highly efficient ICT infrastructure and innovative environment.
In the competition, Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Secondary School Lumut (SMPAPHRSB) emerged champion and received a trophy, a certificate of participation and a cash prize of B$300.
The third runner-up was Sayyidina Ali Secondary School (SMSA) whereas the second runner-up and the first runner-up were Chung Hua Middle School and Chung Ching Middle School respectively. They won a trophy, a certificate of participation and a cash prize.
