PATTANI (Bernama) – Six government primary schools in the province of Pattani had been burnt simultaneously at about 2am yesterday.
According to the police, one school was burnt in the Mayo district while the other five were in the district of Tung-yang-daeng.
Mayo District Police Chief, Pol Col Korn-art Suwankham said a government school, namely Ban Kasak School, in the Mukim of Kasak, in the Mayo district was torched by several suspects.
The double-storey school with eight classrooms was destroyed by the fire, and fire and rescue personnel took two hours to extinguish the fire.
Tung-yang-daeng District Police Chief, Pol Col Kovit Rattanachot said that in the district of Tung-yang-daeng, the five schools razed were Ban Namdam School in the Mukim of Namdam, Ban Khaodin School, Ban Mananjung School and Ban Paku School in the Mukim of Paku, and Ban Tebok School in the Mukim of Piten.
Besides the school buildings, also destroyed or damaged were schooling equipment such as computers, he said.
Police were investigating the motive for the incident and the group that masterminded it, whether it was related to the separatist groups or other parties.
All this while, the teachers were usually the target of the separatist movements.
