BERLIN (dpa) – Spit and polish is not just an old-fashioned phrase for shoe cleaning, it’s also a scientific fact, a German consumer testing organisation, Stiftung Warentest, says.
Saliva contains an enzyme that makes leather shoes shine even more.
So while polishing them, you should spit on the leather to add an extra level of shine.
Shoe cream should be applied in multiple thin layers, according to a new book on household cleaning tricks produced by Stiftung Warentest.
The cream should be given at least 15 minutes to seep into the leather before removing the excess with a rag. Then spit and polish.
The book has another tip. Never place wet shoes on a heater to dry them out as that can cause leather to go brittle.
