THE Bandar Magistrate’s Court yesterday imposed a three-year and eight-month imprisonment term on a 35-year-old man who pleaded guilty, three weeks ago, to 16 charges of attempted theft, theft and mischief by causing damage.
Abu Bakar bin Sulaiman had asked for leniency from Magistrate Azrimah Rahman in considering punishment as he needs to care for his ill mother and his child.
DPP Danial Kifrawi stated in his facts of the case to the court that the defendant’s modus operandi was breaking-in and stealing money or items, and in the course of break-ins, he had caused damages.
The defendant struck a salon in Kampung Pandan 7, an optic store at Jalan Bunga Melor Seria, an interior design shop at Regent Square in Kiulap, a salon at Wisma Yakin at Pandan 5 in Kuala Belait and several shops at The Mall in Gadong.
All offences were committed this year.
The defendant stole items for sale at the shops, money that ran into the thousands, gold jewelleries, designer watches and signed cheques amounting to thousands of dollars which he was able to draw. He caused damages while breaking into the shops.
