A 23-YEAR-OLD local man was sentenced to jail for 54 months by the Bandar magistrate’s court yesterday after he pleaded guilty to nine charges of thefts which includes a series of auto thefts.
DPP Dk Hazirah binti Pg Yusof set out the statement of facts on Ainul Mukminin bin Abdul Rahman’s offences before Senior magistrate Haji Nabil Daraina bin Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin.
Ainul was out with his wife and children at about 6 pm on March 15, 2014 at the parking lot of Abdul Razak Complex in Gadong when he saw a Nissan Pathfinder and decided to steal it.
He used a key he had brought with him and unlocked the car and started its engine.
He then told his family to come into the stolen car and they fled.
The defendant asked a friend to help change the Nissan Pathfinder’s licence plate and continued to use it until it ran out of fuel leaving it in Kg Tanjong Maya, Tutong for another person to dispose of it.
The car owner realised his missing car and lodged a police report which led to the defendant’s arrest.
On September 17, 2014, the defendant was dropped off by a friend at Jalan Gadong when he saw a Suzuki Swift parked at the area where he alighted his friend’s car and gained entry into the Suzuki Swift using a screw driver he had brought along with him.
He then started its engine and drove away. The theft was lodged by the car owner and led to the defendant’s arrest.
On September 18, 2014 at about 7.26 pm, the defendant stole a car which the owner had left the engine running whilst going down to buy stuffs at a convenience shop at Kg Sg Tali, Lumut.
The defendant was stopped in a road block whilst driving the stolen car on October 8, 2014 and was told to stop by the side of the road.
The defendant however left without notifying the police.
The defendant was arrested two days later by traffic police at Kawasan Junjungan, Rimba.
Sometime in September, 2014 the defendant went to a worker’s quarters of a restaurant in Kg Mentiri and entered the place taking away with him a bag containing a mobile phone and other belongings of the occupant.
The owner realised his missing bag and reported to the police.
At about midnight on October 3, 2014, the defendant posed as a person conducting a raid searching for cigarettes and demanded to be shown passports of foreigners who were staying at a worker’s quarters in Kg Tanjong Nangka.
The defendant was with his friends who are now still at large. The defendant took a wallet from one of the foreign workers which amongst others contained BND 76.
The defendant and his group left the premises and this was when the wallet owner lodged a police report.
Sometime in the early hours of October 5, 2014, the defendant drove towards a house at Kg Pancha Delima and entered a house there whose occupants were asleep, taking with him many belongings of the occupants.
A police report was lodged the next day when the occupants realised their missing belongings.
At about 8am on November 30, 2014, the defendant stole a car with its engine running left by its owner who went down at a convenience shop in Kg Mata-Mata. A report was lodged later when the car owner realised his car had gone missing.
On the afternoon of December 7, 2014, the defendant stole another car which was left with its engine running whilst its owner went down to a convenience shop in Sengkurong. On December 24, 2014, the defendant again drove away a car which was left with its engine running whilst its owner went down to a convenience shop in Telisai, Tutong.
