AN INDONESIAN man will be sentenced on December 24 by the Bandar Magistrate’s Court after pleading guilty to charges of possession of smuggled cigarettes and road traffic offences yesterday.
DPP Aiman Zakaria informed Magistrate Azrimah Rahman that Nur Maarif, 48, got into an accident after a police pursuit at about 2.40am on December 16.
The pursuit started when the defendant was seen driving very fast in his white Toyota Corolla car into Simpang Pandan 4 by police who were conducting their rounds at a junction on Jalan Maulana.
The police gave chase to the defendant with the siren on and finally came to a halt when the defendant crashed his car into a “Hospital Suri Seri Begawan” signpost.
Police approached the defendant and found 16 cartons of cigarettes in the defendant’s car.
Nur yesterday pleaded guilty to a first count of possession of 16 cartons of smuggled cigarettes.
A second count is of overstaying in the country after the expiry of his special pass on February 14, 2014 issued by the Immigration department.
A third count is that the defendant had driven without due care and attention by causing damage to the signpost.
A fourth count is that the defendant was driving a vehicle without being covered with insurance policy.
The fifth count is for the defendant’s driving the vehicle without a motor vehicle licence in force.
The sixth count is that the defendant was driving the vehicle with an expired driver’s licence.
