SOME 250 senior citizens yesterday attended a thanksgiving ceremony, organised by the Community Development Department of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) in conjunction with the celebration of the International Senior Citizens Day today.
The ceremony took place at the Community Hall 2 of the Jalan 77, Lambak Kanan National Housing Scheme.
The guests of honour were Datin Paduka Hajah Adina binti Othman, Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports; and Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs.
The ceremony began with a mass Maghrib prayer followed by the recitation of Surah Yaasiin, Tahlil and ‘Doa Kesyukuran’ as well as ‘Doa Peliharakan Sultan dan Negara’. The recitation was led by Awang Haji Amron bin Haji Awang, an officer from the Mosque Affairs Department. A mass Isyak prayer marked the end of the ceremony. One of the objectives of the event is to give recognition to senior citizens for their contributions to the nation.
This includes their efforts towards the development of family, community and the country. Senior citizens are considered as the most valuable assets and it is hoped that the younger generation continue to appreciate and respect them.
Also in attendance at the event were members of the Legislative Council, Permanent Secretary at MCYS, Penghulu Mukim, Village Heads and members of the Senior Citizen Recreational Cente.
