THE Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre yesterday outshined the Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College (MSPSBS) to be crowned the champions of the 18th Interschool Senior Debate that was held at the auditorium.
In the final round, The debate team from Sengkurong comprised Christopher Ijok, Fathima Zahra Nashath, Jerome Liow Shen Voon, Md Nasri Hj Md Tahir, Macalister Mak Geng Buo and Muhammad Danyal bin Johan Thani, and were led by Dk Zarina Jade Pg Sabri.
Awang Md Nasri Hj Md Tahir from Sengkurong also walked away with the Best Speaker award in the final round while Lai Chai Tze was the recipient of the Best Overall Speaker award.
Christopher Ng from the Attorney General’s Chambers represented the judges.
Presenting prizes to the winners and participating teams was David Campbell, the British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, in his capacity as the guest of honour.
Dr Hajah Zurina binti Hj Harun, the Acting Principal of MSPSBS in her opening remark explained the benefits of being involved in debates, saying, “the ability to argue your point may well help you achieve a favourable outcome. Lawyers, Chief Executive Officers and politicians are among the working professionals that require a strong ability to debate.”
The criteria of a good debater she said, “firstly, they must be able to work with other people as teamwork is essential towards producing solid, logical arguments. Secondly, they must be able to think on their feet which includes listening to arguments and critically analysing what has been said by their opponents and responding to points that they disagree with quickly is definitely a bonus.”
