PADUKA Seri Begawan Sultan Science College was announced the champion of the Sixth Form Wordplay 2014 competition after they battled Sengkurong Sixth Form Centre in the final round yesterday. The competition was held at the multi-purpose hall of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex.
The champion walked away with the prize comprising tickets to United Kingdom for the team members and two accompanying teachers. They will also get the opportunity to visit Corpus Christi College Cambridge hosted by the former British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam and CfBT Trustee, Stuart Laing. The second place winner received a cash prize of $100 for each team member.
The guest of honour, Awang Haji Abdul Rahim bin Derus, Acting Director of Schools presented the prizes.
Prior to the competition, the event commenced with a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat followed with a welcome remark by Dr Greg Keaney, Country Manager, Centre for British Teachers (CfBT) Education Services, who highlighted that the competition encourages the use of high-level cognitive skills.
“Whenever I watch student competitions in language, debating, oratory and Wordplay, I feel intimidated by the speed and agility of the minds of the students and I am sure that many of us in the audience will witness the same today,” he said.
“For me, puzzle, challenges and stimulating questions are the ultimate teaching and learning tool; short, simple and requiring minimal use of technology or preparation and they stimulate and motivate learners of all ages,” he added.
The competition was organised by CfBT Education Services (B) Sdn Bhd and supported by the Ministry of Education.
