KUCHING (Bernama) – The Sarawak government has freezed with immediate effect new applications for big scale plantation development in the state except those developed by the people on Native Customary Rights (NCR) land.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem said the move was to curb illegal logging activities that were still widespread in Sarawak following the opening up of big scale plantations on state land.
He disclosed this to reporters during a courtesy call on him by the Kuching Division Journalists Association (KDJA).
Prior to this, he also announced a ‘war’ against illegal timber logging activities in Sarawak.
Adenan said he had directed the Sarawak Forest Department to take firm action against such illegal activities and as a result several raids and arrested were made.
During the meeting, he agreed to allocate a government building to KDJA as its office.
