KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) – The piles of rubbish at flood-hit areas must be disposed off quickly to prevent outbreak of diseases, said Health Director-General Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah. He said delays would encourage the breeding of cockroaches, flies and rats which can spread food and water-borne diseases.
“A dirty environment and food waste not disposed off fast will help increase the rodent population which will pose risks for the spreading of leptospirosis (rat urine disease),” he said in a statement. As such, he said government agencies, local authorities and volunteer groups doing flood relief work must act urgently to get rid of the piles of rubbish.
He also urged the public in flood hit areas to quickly seek medical attention if they developed symptoms like vomiting, stomach ache, rashes, red eyes or their skin turning yellowish. He added the Health Ministry was also in the process of finding the best mechanism to dispose of rubbish that have collected at its flood-hit areas.a
