Manila (dpa) – A town police chief and his deputy were killed when a rookie cop threw a grenade at their station in the southern Philippines, police said Tuesday.
The suspect, Gorospe Cairo, threw the grenade as police officers had dinner on Monday in the police station in Cabangsalan town in Bukidnon province, some 865 kilometres south of Manila. He then fled the scene.
He was seen drinking before coming into the station, said Chief Superintendent Agrimero Cruz, a police regional director, speculating that Cairo was “desperate” after failing a drug test.
Cairo failed a random drug test last month, prompting the filing of administrative charges against him that could lead to possible suspension from duty.
Police launched a manhunt for Cairo, whose weapon was taken away from him after failing the test in January, Cruz said.
