HIS Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 68th Birthday Trophy Futsal Tournament 2014 will start today with an opening ceremony at the Indoor Stadium of Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
Two games will entertain futsal enthusiasts attending the opening ceremony which will be determined after the guest-of-honour, Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer, Mohammad Sunadi bin Haji Buntar makes the draw.
A total of 24 teams will battle it out to determine who will go home with the coveted “Challenge Trophy”, 14 gold medals and cash money of $1,500 as champion, which were won by Rizfiz FT last year, who this year will try to defend their title.
To do so Rizfiz FT must first survive the group stage in Group B which consists of Matahari Futsal FT (MS ABDB) who came second in the Redbull-NFABD Futsal Champions League 2012, Star Madang, Bio FT, Boo FT and Street United.
With their rival in the final, UBD, not sending their team in this year’s tournament, the second runner-up last year, Kota Junior may become their closest rival, who was drawn in Group A with the team they beat 1-0 in the quarter final last year, Syahkampong and four other teams: BVB FT, BIBD SRC ‘B’, X Team and NJP J4F FT.
Third runner-up last year, Shah United ‘A’ are in Group C with Barma FT, Chroniclez FT, BIBD SRC ‘A’, Ikerab FC and Atlas FT, while their younger brother, Shah United ‘B’, who were beaten 1-0 by Kota Junior in the last 16 last year, were drawn in Group D with Silveredz FT, MBS United, PPB-Outs FT, Ex-Perdana and the third runner-up of Redbull-NFABD
Futsal Champions League 2012, Arbisyam FC.
This year’s tournament will be more interesting as four teams from each of the six groups will qualify into the last 16.
Group A and Group B teams will play all of their respective matches in three days of Friday (Oct 3),
Wednesday (Oct 8) and Friday (Oct 10) at the Indoor Stadium, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex, starting at 8pm.
Whereas all the matches in Group C and Group D will be played at the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH), Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex on Tuesday (Oct 14), Tuesday (Oct 21) and Wednesday (Oct 29).
First runner-up of the tournament will bring home 14 silver medals and cash money of $1,000, while second runner-up will win 14 bronze medals and cash money of $500, with the third runner-up receiving cash money of $500.
The annual tournament is organised by the Committee of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 68th Birthday Trophy Futsal Tournament 2014, co-organised by Brunei-Muara District Office, Youth and Sports Department and NFABD.
