AN ENVIRONMENT conservation project was launched yesterday by a member of the legislative council cum the Penghulu of Mukim Gadong ‘A’, YB Awang Haji Tahamit bin Haji Nudin. It was organised by Area 2 of Rimba National Housing Scheme’s village consultative council members.
The so-called MAWAR (preserve, maintain, beautify the environment as our vision and daily practice) 3R (reduce, reuse and recycle) project is a follow up to the previous project in 2008.
The aims were to instil a sense of responsibility in preserving the environment, the cleanliness and beauty of the environment, enhance public awareness on pollution prevention and environmental protection, instil unity and closer ties among the village community and to engage youth in cleaning campaigns as well as to support the government and non-governmental organisation’s (NGO’s) initiative for environmental conservation.
The project involves three phases namely Cleanathon, 3R and Going Green. Cleanathon project is conducted in stages according to different zones at Area 2 of Rimba National Housing Scheme.
The 3R project involves recycling items such as cans, papers, plastics, batteries, electronic equipment and will be handed over to the action group and finally to the recycling companies.
Residents were also advised against using items that could pollute the environment such as plastic bags and reduce the use of electronics that could deplete the ozone layer.
As for the Going Green project, village residents were urged to plant trees and fruit trees at their residence to decorate their surroundings.
