UNIVERSITI Brunei Darussalam (UBD) yesterday held a ceremony to mark the start of the extension of its Sports Complex including the construction of a swimming pool.
The event was inaugurated by the Minister of Education, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, who laid the foundation stone.
The extension of the Sports Complex is a project of the Public Works Department (PWD) and is expected to be completed by November 2015.
The areas affected are the exercise hall, cafeteria, administration office, lobby and reception on the ground floor as well as two aerobics studios, gym studio and a lounge area on the first floor of the complex.
The swimming pool will measure 50m x 25m encompassing 10 lanes and renovation will also be carried out on the existing Surau. At present, the Sports Complex has facilities for tennis, pétanque, basketball, badminton, squash and football.
Following the ceremony, the minister toured a mini exhibition on the achievements of UBD’s students in the field of athletics and sports.
Also in attendance during the ceremony were Deputy Minister of Education, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yusoff bin Haji Ismail, permanent secretaries and senior officials.
