THE number of orphans registered with Pengiran Muda Mahkota Al-Muhtadee Billah Fund for Orphans (DANA) has increase in recent years. In 2008, the figure stood at 1,835 orphans, while the number as of the end of October stood at 3,853 orphans.
“With a 110 per cent increase since 2008, it will indirectly require a stable fund and appropriate planning in order to maintain and preserve the welfare and well-being of orphans in Brunei.”
This was yesterday highlighted by DANA Chief Executive Officer Haji Brahim bin Haji Ismail in his speech during the launch of the SMS Brunei Prihatin for DANA 2014-2015. The day also saw the presentation of DANA contributions in the form of 2015 coupons to orphans.
Effective this year, the value of the coupons has increased to $70 in the hopes of lessening the burden faced by mothers/guardians when purchasing school stationeries, particularly during the first term of the school year, he disclosed.
With the collaboration and support given through the SMS Brunei Prihatin Project for DANA from 2013-2014, the contribution had raised a $105,747 in total.
The ceremony continued with Syarikat G-Box Media presenting the ‘Promo SMS Brunei Prihatin for DANA 2014-2015’ DVDs, which will be aired over the radio, television and at four Cineplex branches nationwide.
Syarikat G-Box Media representative Ak Muhd Hisham bin Pg Shamsudin presented the DVDs to Minister of Development cum guest of honour Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, in his capacity as chairman of Trustee for DANA.
The day also saw the SMS Brunei Prihatin for DANA 2014-2015 poster presentation from DST Group presented by Abdul Latiff bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Md Yusuf, a member of the Board of Directors of DST Group, to the guest of honour.
Coupons were later presented to orphans from all four districts, with a total of 3,854 handed out.
The coupons were received by representatives of the four districts – Acting Brunei-Muara District Officer Mohammad Sunadi bin Haji Buntar, Tutong District Officer Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali, Temburong District Officer representative Azizul Azri bin Haji Majid and Belait District Officer Haji Haris bin Haji Othman.
The coupons can be used at 30 DANA-endorsed companies that supply school items throughout the country.
The ceremony then saw the presentation of contributions to the tune of $12,805 received from Bright Jigsaw International School, with $10,000 presented by Abdul Azim bin Haji Sambas, representative of Bright Jigsaw International School.
Syarikat TSM Motors Trading Sdn Bhd contributed $2,000, Happy Union Restaurant Sdn Bhd handed over $500 and International Graduate Studies (IGS) College Brunei contributed $305, all of which were handed over to the guest of honour.
Also in attendance were senior officials from Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB), Mosque Affairs Department, Information Department, Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah and officers from DST Group and Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd.
The SMS Brunei Prihatin Project for DANA will run for 72 days until February 10. Members of the public who wish to make a contribution can do so by keying in DANA, followed by the value of the donation 1, 5, 10, 15 or 20 (without space) and send it to 38111 for both DST and Progresif Cellular Sdn Bhd lines.
