THE public is urged to hoist the national flag properly in conjunction with Brunei Darussalam’s upcoming 31st National Day to show their patriotism.
This was said during the “Semarak Pengibaran Bendera Negara” programme held by the Information Department at the Central Mall in the Tutong District yesterday to show the correct way to hoist the national flag.
Dato Paduka Haji Hamdan bin Haji Abu Bakar, Permanent Secretary (Security and Enforcement) at the Prime Minister’s Office, as guest of honour at the event, expressed his disappointment that some people are still ignorant of the importance of hoisting the national flag.
Some did not hoist the flag at all during national celebrations, or raised old, worn flags or flew the flags upside down, which showed disrespect, he said.
He said the flag is a symbol of national sovereignty and identity, and everyone must understand the flag’s real meaning.
The chairperson of the programme, Dayang Sastra Sarini binti Haji Julaini, said the programme aimed to encourage people to hoist the national flag during the national celebrations according to the set guidelines.
Also present at the event were members of Brunei Darussalam Legislative Council YB Orang Kaya Maha Bijaya Haji Othman bin Uking and YB Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit, as well as the Tutong District Officer, Awang Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali and other senior government officers, Penghulus and village heads.
