KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) – A college student who concealed the birth of her son and then dumped the dead newborn into a thrash bin last October, was sentenced to 18 months jail by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Norhidayah Yon, 19, a business management diploma student pleaded guilty on Nov 4, to committing the offence at Block C, PV6 Condominium, Platinum Hill Park, Jalan Setapak, at 4am on Oct 28.
However, the court deferred sentencing pending her probation report. Earlier before the sentencing today, deputy public prosecutor Ooi Chean Ling urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence as a lesson to the offender for committing the inhumane, vicious and heinous crime.
“There is no appropriate sentence other that imprisonment, considering that such offences have become very rampant,” she submitted.
In her mitigation, Norhidayah who was unrepresented, said she was remorseful of her action and asked to be given a chance to repent.
