IPOH (Bernama) – The police yesterday shot dead two of three men who had staged a robbery at a house in Gunung Rapat last Friday following a shootout at Jalan Sungai Kroh leading towards Kampung Gajah.
Perak Police chief Datuk Osman Salleh said the two robbers, aged 42 and 62, died on the spot in the shootout after a special team from the Perak CID spotted them in Tapah at about 5am.
“When the police approached the Proton Waja car in which the duo were in, they fired several shots at the police,” he told a news conference at the Perak Police headquarters.
Two bullets hit a policeman but the bullet-proof vest he was wearing prevented serious injury, he said.
Osman said police found a .22 revolver, four rounds of ammunition, two empty shells and a machete following the shootout.
An investigation revealed that the car was reported stolen in September last year in Penang, he said.
He said the 42-year-old robber had 11 criminal records, among them for housebreaking, vehicle theft and a murder in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
“The 62-year-old robber had 15 criminal records, among them for robbery and violating a restriction order in Sungai Bayor, Penang, in 2010,” he said.
Osman said the third robber was arrested on Friday itself following the robbery at the house in Taman Song Choon in Gunung Rapat.
The trio had pounced on four men gambling at the house at 8.30pm, firing at and injuring two of them, he said.
One of the robbers was injured after he was hit in the abdomen with a chair by one of the victims, forcing a robber to open fire, he said.
The victims caught one of the robbers while the two others fled in a Proton Waja car, he said.
Police questioned the robber who was caught and it led to the arrest of a 53-year-old man, believed to be a member of the gang, at an apartment in Genting Highlands, Pahang, at about 2am yesterday, he said.
