TWO Police Constables will face the music soon after being convicted yesterday following a trial on a charge of receiving bribes.
Senior magistrate Pg Masni Pg Bahar found PC4483 Amirul Izzat bin Haji Yahya and PC 3813 Mat Zidi bin Haji Jumat guilty of receiving $40 bribe money from a Chinese Bruneian at about 1.30pm on July 22, 2009, on the Hassanal Bolkiah Highway as inducement to not take action on an alleged road traffic offence committed by the Chinese man.
DPP Hajah Anifa Hj Abd Ghani’s evidence was found to have proven the charge against the policemen to be beyond the court’s reasonable doubt despite the defendants’ alibis.
The policemen asked the Chinese man to pull over because he did not put on his seat belt.
The policemen’s duty on the day in question was only to execute warrants and serve summons for a court date and not to issue compounds for any offences. Yet, the policemen had threatened to issue a compound on the defendant.
It came about that the policemen took bribe money and let the Chinese man go.
Defence counsel Ahmad Zakaria acted on behalf of the defendants. The senior magistrate fixed January 5, 2015 for the defendants’ mitigations and sentencing.
