Manila (dpa) – One of the pope’s three designated vehicles in the Philippines is a kind of jeepney, the familiar repurposed jeeps that are the backbone of the country’s public transport.
Dubbed “kings of the road” for their bulky frames and the assertive way they push through Manila traffic, the invariably packed jeepneys can get you to almost any destination in the country.
They are also used to transport goods from vegetables to live animals to construction materials.
The original jeepneys were refurbished military jeeps by US manufacturers Willys-Overland Motors and Ford Motor Company left behind by the Americans after World War II.
New versions of the open-sided vehicles are still modelled on US jeeps, but are often elongated to accommodate more passengers.
