KUMPULAN Penggiat Seni Tanah Air Brunei (PeSTAB) sealed third spot during the “Empayar Akar Zapin Nusantara 2014/2015” competition in Kuala Lumpur.
The competition was organised by Malaysia Tatihseni Association and Noraniza Idris Production Ventures Sdn Bhd with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Malaysia.
PeSTAB group comprises 12 members (dancers and musician) led by its chairman Awg Seruddin bin Awang Damit. A total of five teams took part in the competition namely, Johor Malaysia, Som Said Singapore, PeSTAB Brunei, Riau, Indonesia and Laksamana Riau, Indonesia.
The competition was divided into two segments – Tarian Zapin and Battle. In both competitions Brunei Darussalam won third place in the medley dance called ‘Jipin Laila Sembah and Tar”. Johor Malaysia team emerged champion and second place was won by Som Said Singapore and fourth and fifth place went to Riau, Indonesia.
The objective of the competition was to raise the standards of the Akar Zapin in the global and international level through a friendly competition between Asean in cultural exchange programmes which involved four countries such as Indonesia, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam and hosted by Malaysia.
The competition was held in conjunction with Malaysia 57th Independence Day and Malaysia Day celebration to foster joint relations between the Asean countries.
