PERSATUAN Tanjong Maya (Pertama) School in Tutong celebrated its Silver Jubilee yesterday. The private school was established by members of the village association of Kampung Tanjong Maya 25 years ago. Since then it has become one of the most sought-after schools in Tutong District.
The guest of honour was Deputy Minister of Education, Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Yusoff bin Haji Ismail.
In his speech, he said the Government of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam appreciates the involvement of the private sector in the development of the country by taking an important role in education, especially in realising and contributing towards Vision 2035.
The deputy minister also praised the leadership of Persatuan Tanjong Maya, stating that it is not easy to establish a school.
It needs dedicated and passionate leaders who are brave in confronting challenges.
He also praised Pertama School for maintaining outstanding results in PSR examinations, with a good passing rate of more than 90 per cent over the past 25 years.
The achievement is above the national target of 85 per cent.
The deputy minister said the school’s programmes and strategic plans ensure teaching and learning would reach its intended target.
The deputy minister congratulated the school for proving itself with a number of students achieving 5As.
The deputy minister, however, warned the school against complacency, urging its students to strive for better results.
He also urged the school to inculcate values in other fields such as religion, charity, culture and sports.
The deputy minister also lauded the teachers for their dedication and passion that have helped produce excellent students.
President of Persatuan Kampung Tanjung Maya, Haji Osman bin Haji Yahya, in his speech, said the celebration was to honour the pioneer leaders of the school.
Haji Osman said the school was built with a budget of $300,000, collected from members of the association, and the construction began in 1989.
Among those present were Tutong District Officer, Wardi bin Haji Mohammad Ali, LegCo Member YB Awang Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit and other guests.
