BALIK PULAU (Bernama) – Hills here are going ‘bald’, despite the outcry by several quarters over the encroachment of Bukit Relau in mid 2013.
One such hill is the Bukit Batu Itam/Bukit Laksamana which is connected to Sungai Pinang in Balik Pulau and Teluk Bahang.
A survey by Bernama found that the hilly area was previously covered with trees, which had obviously been cut down.
There is a track for lorries at the site which had a signboard, ‘private property’ on it.
Pulau Betong assemblyman Muhammad Farid Saad said when contacted, that he became aware of the balding hills two weeks ago while visiting an eatery at Kampung Sungai Pinang, Balik Pulau.
He said the unwelcome sight could be viewed from Kampung Sungai Pinang and near the Teluk Bahang reservoir.
“Aren’t development activities, particularly hills, monitored by the state government? Either they are not aware or do not bother,” he said.
Muhammad Farid claimed that the hilly developments could endanger the local community because the area is believed to be a water catchment area.
