AS THE Chinese New Year celebration entered its third day yesterday, the local Chinese community in the Sultanate continued to celebrate the festive tradition by hosting open houses for guests and friends.
Yesterday, Pehin Kapitan China Kornia Diraja Lau Ah Kok, one of the prominent figures in the local Chinese community, hosted a Chinese New Year open house for foreign diplomats. The event was held at his residence in Jalan Muara.
Among the foreign diplomats who attended yesterday’s open house reception were Craig B Allen, the US Ambassador; Abdolhamid Fekri, the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran; Marina Larker, High Commissioner of Canada; Yang Jian, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China; Nurul Qomar, the Ambassador of Indonesia and David Ian Campbell, the British High Commissioner.
The Bulletin spoke to the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Brunei Darussalam, Yang Jian about the Chinese New Year celebration in both countries. She said that this is her first year celebrating the festival in Brunei and she is impressed with the way Chinese tradition is being preserved and practised by the local Chinese community here.
She was also amazed by the open house tradition practised by the local Chinese community in which they are not only inviting families and friends but also members of the public.
The event was part of the annual tradition carried out by Pehin Lau and his family in their effort to strengthen friendship and enhance the multicultural relationship among foreign diplomats.
