STUDENTS from Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS), Universiti Brunei Darussalam, yesterday held an awareness workshop titled “Stigma and Discrimination Towards People With Special Needs”.
The aim was to raise awareness among Year 4 and Year 5 students of Sungai Kebun Primary School.
The workshop was organised by 3rd year Medicine students – Ak Muhd Yazakka Pg Hj Mohd Yamin, Nazhrah Al-Ieman Hj Mostapha and Nurul Farhana Muhd Ariffin – from PAPRSB IHS, UBD as part of their Special Study Module where they are required to create a community-based project.
The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah followed by distribution of a pre-intervention survey to each student to check their awareness on people with special needs.
The event continued with a talk by a representative from Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam, an ice breaking session and a performance by drama students, themed after the workshop.
A talk on general astigmatism was then conducted by students, Ak Muhd Yazakka, Nazhrah Al-Ieman and Nurul Farhana. The partcipants were divided into groups for a drawing contest where each group was expected to draw their idea of the symbol of friendship.
This was followed by a prize presentation for the drawing competition based on creativity, teamwork and drawing explanation. The children then participated in a sing-along where they sang songs “Let it go” and “Respect”.
A continuation of the earlier drama performance was then enjoyed by the students.
The workshop was concluded by a reflection session where students shared how they felt about the drama skit and what they should do when they see a special needs person. There was also a video presentation.
Day two of the workshop will be held on Tuesday, October 7 at the Sungai Kebun Sports Complex, for students and teachers of Pusat Ehsan and Sungai Kebun Primary schools. The workshop will include activities such as aerobics and competitions such as flying coins, dress up, ping pong, Chinese whisper, water and sponge and three-legged race.
