THE Oil and Gas Discovery Centre, (OGDC) a flagship of Brunei Shell Petroleum Company (BSP), hosted yet another science camp for students from all the four districts.
The camp, themed ‘Science of Flight’, took place on December 1 to 3 at the centre and saw 75 participants from all over Brunei.
OGDC is well known for promoting science, technology and innovation. The camp carries the objective of instilling the interest of science, technology and innovation within young Bruneians.
It contained activities that the centre believes will stimulate the interest of being in the field of engineering and aviation, simultaneously to establish in-depth understanding of science of flight and to create a platform for students to be freely creative and innovative.
The two and a half day camp was packed with various activities that put each participant’s understanding of science to the test.
During the first day of the camp, participants were given a water rocket workshop conducted by OGDC’s Science Communicator.
The workshop comprised two sessions, where in the first session participants were taught on how to build their own water rocket launcher using items such as used plywoods and PVC pipes. In this workshop participants were able to grasps the knowledge of basic design and innovation.
In the second session, participants were given the privilege to design their own rocket by using recyclable materials such as used bottles and newspapers. The water rocket workshop as a whole taught the participants about the science of physics.
The workshop concluded with a launching session whereby they were enabled to test and experiment their water rocket.
Through activities like these participants were not only exposed to science of flight but also to provide opportunities for participants to ask questions, investigate and draw conclusions from their own experiments, encouraging and enabling them to improve their own experiments, encouraging and enabling them to improve their own specific literacy.
Mohd Hafiz bin Hj Mohammad, Year 8, from St John’s School stated that he found the workshop to be very interesting and new. He had never built a water rocket launcher before.
On the second day, participants were brought for a special visit to Brunei Shell Aviation Department (SAV).
The participants were welcomed by Sahfri Damit, SAV Senior Aircraft Engineer and later by Basiron Yusop, one of the engineers from SAV and were then given a presentation about SAV at high level view.
The campers had the privilege to go into SAV’s control tower, visited the terminal, hanger and had a close view of the fire trucks there. Participants had the chance to communicate with one of SAV’s pilots, Asyaari Rosli.
Asyaari shared his experience as a pilot with the campers and briefed them about the requirements on becoming an SAV pilot.
He highlighted that a candidate must possess an A-Level qualification with strong Mathematics and English background.
With the visit conducted, OGDC believes that it will definitely leave a positive impact on the campers and this will lead to stimulating the interest of the world aviation and engineering in them.
The camp was supported by 10 volunteers from high schools. The volunteering programme carries an objective of enhancing participants organising and public speaking skills.
The centre believes this programme will be able to help them in conducting their own events and workshops.
Dayangku Liyana Amaliena Pg Ahmad commented that the volunteering programme was very beneficial for them. It was her first time volunteering for an OGDC camp and it was very entertaining for her.
She added that the idea of bringing the participants for the SAV visit was excellent, the participants had a good insight of what OGDC does and it was very interactive.
Apart from the workshop and special visit, various team building activities and tech challenges were also conducted to further enhance the participant’s critical thinking and leadership skills.
A prize and certificate giving ceremony concluded the camp.
The public can look forward to OGDC’s upcoming Cool Fun Science School Holiday activities. For more information the public can visit OGDC’s website at www.ogdcbrunei.com.
