THE first ever Udang Galah Fishing Competition organised by the local Off-road Anglers Tracker (OAT) club at the Tutong River Waterfront attracted around 143 participants yesterday.
The participants, who camped alongside their families and friends, were at the venue from the morning until early afternoon hoping to get the best catch.
Although water conditions made it a little difficult to catch the Udang Galah (as it is a bit off season), some proved lucky.
The day’s first catch was by Zulkarnain Hj Ariffin, who won $50 in cash and other prizes.
However, at the end of the day, Mohd Khairol Izam scored the highest point (in terms of total weight – 122 grammes) and won the competition overall, receiving a trophy, $300 and other prizes from various sponsors.
Coming in second and third place respectively were Md Saifullah Sahiman and Kamis Abdul Rami, who also each won a trophy, cash and other prizes.
The winners received their prizes from the Acting Tutong District Officer, Hj Adnan Hj Adam.
Meanwhile, in an interview, Noorrajimi Hj Awg Marani, chairman of the organising committee, said that response was encouraging and he hopes the competition will be held again in the future.
He said that the competition was a great leisure activity for the whole family, especially during the school holiday season, adding that catching Udang Galah is different from catching fish, and that it requires more patience.
