WASHINGTON (WP-BLOOM) – When launching Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Nintendo introduced something unusual alongside it: Amiibo.
What are Amiibo? They’re small figurines of some beloved Nintendo characters, and what they can do is what’s really cool.
What’s great about Amiibo is that they already work with your Wii U.
Tap an Amiibo on your GamePad controller, and it’s immediately recognised.
Depending on the game, the Amiibo will unlock special abilities and items.
It’s important to note that you don’t need Amiibo figures to enjoy the games — Super Smash Bros, Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors — that support them. These games play just fine without them.
What made us like Amiibo a lot was how you can incorporate them into Super Smash Bros.
Think of an Amiibo as your fighting buddy — you don’t need to control it. Once you activate it, the Amiibo learns how you fight against other characters.
While it fights beside you, it’s earning experience.
This experience allows it to move up levels.
The more you play with your Amiibo, the more powerful it gets.
What’s cool is that this power is embedded in the figure itself.
So when you go to a friend’s house, you can bring your Amiibo, activate it on their Wii U and have your experienced, powerful Amiibo fight against his!
There are 12 Amiibo characters, including Mario, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Link and Pikachu.
More will be released next year. Each one will run you US$12.99.
