BY COMMAND of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam, the Prime Minister’s Office yesterday announced that His Majesty has consented to the appointment of Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib as Speaker of the Legislative Council to replace YB Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Bakti Diraja Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Isa bin Pehin Datu Perdana Manteri Dato Laila Utama Haji Awang Ibrahim.
The appointment will take effect from today, 21st of Rabiulakhir, 1436 corresponding to February 11, 2015.
Born on December 5, 1942, Pehin Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman contributed in steering the country’s educational develo-pment towards a higher standard.
He held a number of ministerial posts including Minister of Development (1984-1986), Minister of Education (1986-1988), Minister of Industry and Primary Resources (1989-2005), and again Minister of Education (2005-2010).
Pehin Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman was also the chairman of the National Education Council, chairman of the Universiti Brunei Darussalam Council, and chairman of the Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali Council.
On August 15, 2009, he was also elected chairman of the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) Supreme Council.
Pehin Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman was also involved in the development and implementation of the Ministry of Education Strategic Plan 2007-2011, a document that laid out the direction of the Ministry of Education to ensure all departments under the ministry are always on the right path to achieve their vision and mission.
The nation’s SPN21 was introduced under his able stewardship. This became Pehin Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman’s most significant contribution. The SPN21 is a significant milestone in the history of the nation’s education system.
The former minister was also instrumental in the establishment of the country’s second university – Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) on January 1, 2007.
