DUNGUN (Bernama) – A young mother and her two-day-old daughter are now recovering at a flood relief centre here after she gave birth to her child on Friday.
Mariam Abd Rahman, 22, had earlier waded through waist-high flood waters to reach the relief centre when her home in Kampung Paya was flooded for four days.
Soon after arriving at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Balai Besar relief centre, Mariam suffered labour pains and had to be rushed by her husband and family members to Dungun Hospital where she gave birth to her second child.
Met by reporters here, Mariam said on the way to hospital, both sides of the road were flooded, so she was worried that she might not reach the hospital in time and gave birth in the car.
“Thankfully, I was safe and delivered my baby girl in hospital at 6.24am. That memory will always remain in my mind,” she said.
Mariam said recovering at the relief centre was difficult but it was the only place she could seek shelter and the village clinic nurse could check her medical status and that of her new daughter, Siti Aisyah Mohd Hairi.
She said she could never forget the experience of having to quickly evacuate her home at 7pm on Thursday when the flood waters around her house rose fast.
