THE national netball team played Sri Lanka’s former national players at Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium Sports Complex in Berakas yesterday, in what was the first of a four-match series slated to take place over the next few days.
Sri Lanka head coach Trixie Nanayakara said both teams played very well with long passes.
“The Brunei team have young athletes and are very fit. They played fast and will go far if proper training is done.’’
Brunei head coach Thilaka Jinadasa said the team needed this for the exposure.
“It is better to play against outsiders. This will encourage them to adopt different playing styles … even I was surprised to see the players play aggressively.
“I didn’t see any player giving up easily. Everyone was trying hard.”
“This is the final selection for the national team and I have to give the substitutes a chance to play, too.
“I started with my strongest players and may not start with the same players in the next three matches.
“We are also planning to organise the Borneo Cup and the Phillippines may join.
“I feel this is good for the team’s preparations for the SEA Games. But this all still in discussion and planning.
“The players have enough training sessions and I believe they are really fit,” said Thilaka.
