NAZIRUL Syahiran bin Awang Azmay and Dk Nur Syaidatul Afidah binti Pg Mahari both won the prestigious Sports School Sportsman and Sportswoman Awards, respectively during the prize presentation of academic and sports excellence in 2013 at the Manggis Ballroom of Hua Ho Manggis Mall last night.
Nazirul Syahiran’s finest achievement in badminton to date was winning first place in the Secondary Schools, Colleges and Higher Learning Institutes Championships in 2013.
His list of accomplishments included achieving third place in the ‘Flyover Open’ last year as well as third-place finishes in the Brunei Open Championship and the Brunei Skyblue Westlake Open Championship this term.
Nazirul Syahiran also represented Brunei Darussalam in Indonesia in the Asean Pertamina Open and the Asean School Games in Vietnam last year as well as the JENESYS Badminton Program in Japan this year.
He beat other nominees namely Awg Maswafiyuddin Shafwan Sharani bin Hj Shari, Awg Md Muizzudin bin Jamaludin, Awg Ahmad Muawwiz bin Hj Omar and Awg Mohd Dinie Rafa’ie bin Roslan to win the award.
Dk Nur Syaidatul’s highly impressive track record both overseas and domestically earned her much acclaim and recognition in the national scene.
The uprising silat exponent made sporting headlines in the region after winning a silver medal in the 16th International Sports School Games in Thailand in 2013.
Dk Nur Syaidatul has earlier announced her arrival as the one of the region’s sporting talents after winning bronze in the 4th Asean School Games in Indonesia in 2012.
At the domestic level, Dk Nur Syaidatul is a two-time gold medallist in the Colleges and Higher Learning Institutes Championships in 2011 and 2013.
The nominees for the Sports School Sportswoman Award 2013 were Dyg Fifi Anastasia Anak Baki and Dyg Khairun Nadiah binti Khairul Amin.
Meanwhile, there were also academic excellence awards presented to the best students in the respective subjects in all years from Year 8 to Year 10 as well as in the BGCE ‘O’ Level and IGCSE 2013.
The guest of honour at the event was Hj Abdul Rahim bin Derus, the Acting Director- General of Education, who awarded the academic and sporting excellence awards to the recipients.
