FOR the first time, National Youth Day Run will be held simultaneously in all four districts on the morning of November 23 to celebrate the 9th National Youth Day. The theme is, “Unity in Confronting the Challenges of the 21st Century”
Details of the 2014 National Youth Day Run were revealed yesterday by Dayang Mariam Binti Ulat, the Chief of Youth and Sports under Youth and Sports Department, in a press conference held at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports building.
The categories contested are 10km men open (40 years and below) and 10km women open (40 years and below). The special needs individual (40 years and below) categories of 3km are for visually impaired, wheel chair users, hearing and intellectually disabled men and women.
The non-competitive category is the 4km fun run which is open for all.
The top ten winners of the open categories will receive cash prizes along with certificates and medals. The top three prizes were disclosed – First place finisher will go home with $1000 cash while second place will get $700 and $500 goes to third place.
Top 30 runners who finish the race will also get a special limited edition medal.
Top three finishers of each of the special need individual category will also receive cash, medal and certificates.
The 2014 National Youth Day Run for Brunei Muara District will be held at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium. For Tutong District it is at Tutong Sport complex while for Belait district it is at Mumong Sport Complex and for Temburong District the event will be held at Temburong Sport complex.
The National Youth Day Run can be participated by citizens and permanent residents of the country as well as foreigners who hold a green or purple identification card. The registration fee is $20 for each person while under 17 participants will have to bring along a permission letter from parents or guardian.
Each participant will receive a special T-shirt and a towel as well as a bib (for competing runners) after registration.
Registration forms can be obtained at Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Youth and Sports branch of Tutong, Belait and Temburong during office hours. There is also online registration. The closing date for registration is November 8.
Apart from running, there are also other side activities at the venue namely stalls, exhibitions by Health Promotion Centre and Narcotic Control Bureau. His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam has declared that the celebration of Youth Day will be held every August 1 as recognition of the youth movement in the country.
