HANOI (Bernama) – Myanmar army arrested 102 foreigners and 20 Myanmar nationals on Tuesday for suspected illegal logging in Kachin state near the Myanmar-Chinese border, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.
Myanmar’s Ministry of Defence on Wednesday said the army also seized logging and trailer trucks, stimulant drugs, raw opium and Chinese yuan notes during a three-day operation.
However, the ministry declined to reveal the nationalities of the foreign suspects.
Recent efforts to curb timber smuggling were attributed to Myanmar’s success in cutting down illegal timber production.
In April 2014, the country banned exports of timber to keep deforestation in check and boost domestic wood processing industry.
Myanmar’s forest coverage fell from 57.9 percent in 1990 to 47.6 per cent in 2005.
