THE Muara Container Terminal held a warm welcoming ceremony yesterday as the Sultanate marked the maiden voyage of MV EVER APEX of EverGreen Line – known as the 4th largest shipping fleet in the world.
On hand to welcome the ship was Minister of Communications Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdullah bin Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Haji Bakar.
The 165-container vessel, with a 10,500 weigh tonnage, has a capacity of 750 TEUs. The fixed weekly schedule and extensive global network of the shipping line enable entrepreneurs access to import and export cargo to more destinations around the world.
The new route will hopefully serve as a beacon for other main shipping lines to call at Muara Port, potentially increasing shipping activities in order to reach the targeted economic growth of five to six per cent GDP from B$20 billion to B$80 billion by 2035.
This will essentially provide greater competition to existing shipping lines currently operating, eventually lead to more competitive pricing and lower logistics costs, and enhance Brunei Darussalam’s position as a foreign direct investment destination.
It is hoped that EverGreen’s presence will be a long-time commitment and that Muara Port will continue to remain committed to providing a conducive business environment, optimise efficiency and capacity utilisation with continuous improvements that should bode well for the industry, without compromising safety and security aspects.
Also present at the ceremony were Acting Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Communications Mohd Riza bin Dato Paduka Awg Haji Mohd Yunos, Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) CEO Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metusin, EverGreen Marine Corp (M) Sdn Bhd President Jack Wu, Archipelago Development Corp Sdn Bhd Executive Chairman Haji Md Razali, directors and senior officers from various government agencies.
