KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) – Muslims should not be blaming others for misunderstanding Islam when they themselves are not showing the world the true values of the religion, said European Muslim Network president Prof Dr Tariq Ramadan.
He also said there is a need for Muslims worldwide to have a better understanding on the concept of jihad, and to show the world that Islam is not a religion that promotes acts of violence.
The Oxford University Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies also said that the word jihad has been distorted by many Muslims around the world due to a lack of understanding of the concept.
“We have to make it clear that there are two problems (in jihad), one is the misunderstanding in the religious term, and second, the misuse of the concept in political terms,” he said in his talk titled “The Quranic concept of jihad and how do we rise above its misinterpretations”.
The talk was presented at the International Conference on Islam Rahmatan Lil’ Alamin in conjunction with the 12th International Youth Gathering yesterday which was attended by 200 participants from 100 Islamic non-governmental organisations (NGO) from 20 countries.
